MAXXXINE. A PERFECT ENDING?

MAXINE MINX.

In early 2022 when 'X' came out, starring the one and only Mia Goth, an obsession flared inside me with these thrilling, disruptive and intoxicating movies that Ti West was a master at. Pearl, released 6 months later, changed my thought process on what I truly thought horror was. That term is thrown around a lot lately, 'real cinema' and 'revolutionary', when the film was more than mediocre at best (e.g challengers, sorry Luca). I always understood horror to be a slasher, with no real depth other than a man who might be unstoppable, slaughtering for no real reason than that he could. But Maxine was different. She drew me in from the second, I sat in the cinema and heard that southern accent. It was something I never knew existed in my world. A female? Who has emotions? Is career-driven? Impossible. Insanity. But, it was real. And Maxxxine (2024)? Could be my favourite movie of the year (Yes, I did watch Dune Pt.2. Yes, it was incredible. Yes, I stand by what I said. Shoot me.)

From the moment, it started I was giggling in excitement. From the moment, it ended? I wanted to watch it again for the first time again. I wanted to stay in my seat and watch it again to look at parts of the screen I wasn't before. We had a 70's exotic slasher, a 20's villain prequel, and now a 80's stardom ending. Can life get any better? Each of the movies had their own individual flair, with strong stories, paired to each instalment. The first ten minutes had me giddy. The hype was real. The costumes, the messy makeup, the attitudes. It was loaded with nostalgia!  It is impossible to forget the soundtrack. The first thing I did on that car-ride home was blast the official soundtrack (matter-of-fact I am listening to it as I write this).

The trilogy, made my Ti West, holds a lot of love for me. I think that some may say it didn't have clear direction, or a pointless story. To some extent I agree, but I believe that's what made the horror trilogy it's own. It doesn't follow the typical horror/slasher rules, and it doesn't follow what 'the audiences want'. It tells the story of Maxine. Fucking. Minx. A superstar in a super movie. In my books? The trilogy should be praised... awarded for it's individually and determination to outstand typical characteristic traits. It's camp. It's fun. And, it's deep. What more could a girl ask for?

A definite frame.  (will have kids just to show them this masterpiece of a trilogy)
